it's chaotic, and we love it

When the Strenk family booked their in-home lifestyle family session, mom told me in her pre-session questionnaire that she wanted it to feel like Sunday morning.

Slow. Cozy. Real.

They hadn’t taken family photos since their son’s newborn session, and that alone made this session feel weighty, not in pressure, but in meaning. These photos were long overdue. They weren’t just about documenting what their family looks like now… they were about honoring how far they’ve come.

As a family photographer, I knew this session wasn’t about perfection. It was about presence.

Why Choose an In-Home Lifestyle Family Session?

If you’ve ever wondered whether to book an in-home family session or a park session, here’s the magic:

Your home tells your story.

The Strenk home wasn’t staged. It wasn’t spotless. It was alive.

The walls were adorned with their children’s artwork. The couch was soft and inviting. The dining room table doubled as an art station. Some might call it messy, I call it inspired. Lived-in. Joyful. A reminder that children aren’t just visitors in their home… they belong there. They take up space there. They LIVE there.

And that’s exactly what we documented.

The Grand Tour: Finding the Storyline

When I arrive at an in-home session, I always do what I call “the grand tour.”

Mom walked me through the first floor:

  • The comfy couch in the living room
  • The kitchen where they cook together
  • The dining room turned art studio
  • The staircase that kept catching my eye

While they showed me the space, my brain was already building the storyline.

Where do we begin?

Where do we end?

How do we make this feel like Sunday morning?

Then I asked something that wasn’t part of the original plan:

“Can we start upstairs?”

Starting in the Bedroom: Cozy, Playful, Real

Dad worked on a puzzle while mom quickly made the bed, real life unfolding before we even officially started.

We began in their room.

The kids jumped on the bed.

Mom and dad cuddled them close.

There was laughter, tickling, chaos in the best way.

Within minutes, I had won them over.

“Oh, this lady wants us to have fun.”

When photographing children, momentum matters. I move quickly. We jump, we cuddle, we spin, and before they can lose interest, we shift scenes.

KITCHEN MOMENTS: SIMPLE IS BEST

Mom mentioned they love cooking together.

Instead of committing to a full baking production (hello, flour explosion), I channeled my inner mom and asked myself:

What do I do in my kitchen with my kids?

Cut fruit.

Simple. Colorful. Not too messy. Perfect.

We made a fruit salad, and in those few minutes we captured:

  • Tiny hands reaching
  • Mom laughing
  • Dad sneaking bites
  • Hand washing and bubble explosions

Lifestyle photography isn’t about recreating Pinterest moments. It’s about elevating the everyday ones.

DANCE PARTY + ART TIME = CHILDHOOD

From the kitchen, we flowed naturally into the living room.

They turned on Queen and had a full dance party. Singing at the top of their lungs. Twirling. Hugging. Pure joy.

Then we transitioned to coloring in the dining room, light pouring in from a big beautiful window. I love shooting through windows — I call it “looking in.” It feels intimate. Observational. Honest.

Those frames? They feel like memories.

ENDING OUTSIDE THEIR HOME

We finished the session outside.

On the front steps. In front of the house that holds their everyday magic.

Because this is the place where they:

  • Eat
  • Rest
  • Create
  • Grow
  • Love

And I wanted to document that full circle.

WHAT MAKES IN-HOME FAMILY PHOTOGRAPHY SO POWERFUL?

An in-home lifestyle session captures:

  • Authentic connection
  • Real routines
  • Natural light in meaningful spaces
  • The season of life you’re actually in

You don’t need a perfectly styled house. You need love. And the Strenk family had so much of it.

My hope is that when they look back at these images years from now, they won’t just see what their home looked like — they’ll feel what it felt like to live there.

And if you can feel that when you look at these photos?

Then we told the story right.

A family shares a tender moment together by a window in their home, creating a warm and intimate atmosphere.
A tender black and white family moment showing parents embracing their young child in an intimate setting.

THINKING ABOUT BOOKING AN IN-HOME LIFESTYLE SESSION?

If it’s been years since your last family photos…

If your home feels “too messy”…

If you want something that feels like you

This is your sign.

Your Sunday morning is worth remembering.

WHY LOCATION CHANGES THE FEELING OF YOUR PHOTOS

Here’s the real difference:

A studio captures how your family looks.

Your home captures how your family lives.

When children are in their own space, they relax. They move freely. They show their true personalities.

There’s no rushing out the door.

No unfamiliar environment.

No pressure to behave “perfectly.”

Just real connection and that authenticity translates into images that feel alive.

Whatever stage your family is in, I promise you one thing, it's worth remembering.

Mic. Drop.
