We started the morning in the family’s cozy playroom, which might sound like an unusual spot to kick off a session—but hear me out. Two years ago, we captured studio portraits of their firstborn, and mom wanted to recreate those black-and-white shots with her youngest son this time around. With a little creativity (and a sheer curtain!), we turned their playroom into a dreamy little setup. You’d never guess those soft, intimate photos were taken just a few feet away from a pile of toy trucks and books. It’s amazing what a little window light and a mama’s love can do.
From there, we moved through the house, capturing the family in their natural environment, snuggling on the couch, and simply being together. In-home sessions like this are some of my favorite to photograph. There’s something special about freezing those everyday moments in the very place where they happen. No stiff posing, no rushing out the door. Just real life, beautifully documented.
When we took the session outdoors, things got even more fun. Big sister Gigi made it very clear that she was in her solo star era. She only wanted to pose for photos where she was alone—classic toddler energy and 100% iconic. But with a little leaf-picking fun and silly games, we cracked her up and got the whole family laughing in no time. That’s the secret to photographing toddlers, keep it playful, go with the flow, and never underestimate the power of leaf investigation.
