When You Say Yes to Something That Scares You

There are two types of inquiries I get as a photographer.

The ones that feel familiar… and the ones that make me pause for a second and think, wait… how would I even do that?

This was the second kind.

When Karina reached out to me about doing a pickleball photoshoot with her and her best friend, my first thought was:

“I’ve literally never done this before.”

And my second thought?

“Okay… but this could be really fun.”

Stepping Out of My Comfort Zone (and Onto a Pickleball Court)

As a Miami photographer, I’m used to a certain rhythm.

Golden hour light.

Soft tones.

Predictable environments where I know exactly how the session will flow.

This?

This was none of that.

We were shooting at 3PM.

On a pickleball court.

In full, direct, no-cloud-in-sight sunlight.

AKA… every “rule” photographers are taught to avoid.

Let’s talk about it.

Midday light is harsh. It creates strong shadows, bright highlights, and contrast that can feel intimidating if you’re used to softer sessions.

Normally, I would reschedule.

Wait for sunset.

Find shade.

But this session?

There was no way around it. The owner was opening the court for our photoshoot one hour before it was open to the public, so we had no choice.

And honestly… I didn’t want one.

Because saying yes to this meant leaning into the moment instead of trying to control it, and working under totally unique circumstances.

And Somehow… It Worked

Actually—scratch that.

It didn’t just work.

It was incredible.

The movement, the laughter, the energy between them—it all came to life in a way that felt so different from anything I’ve done before.

There was something about the bold light + bold personalities that just clicked.

No overthinking.

No perfection.

Just real moments. This session reminded me of something I think a lot of us forget:

Not everything beautiful has to be soft.

Not every session has to fit into a box.

And not every “rule” is actually meant to be followed.

Sometimes the magic happens when you say yes to something that feels unfamiliar.

Something a little uncomfortable.

Something you’ve never done before.

Thinking About Booking a Creative Session in Miami?

If you’ve been sitting on an idea that feels a little different… this is your sign.

Whether it’s:

  • pickleball photoshoot
  • A hobby you love
  • A unique way to celebrate your friendship or relationship

I’m all in.

Because if this session taught me anything, it’s that the best photos don’t always come from perfect conditions…

They come from real moments, real energy, and a willingness to try something new.

Final Thoughts (From a Photographer Who Broke Her Own Rules)

I went into this session a little unsure.

I left feeling inspired, energized, and honestly… proud.

Because growth doesn’t happen when everything feels easy.

It happens when you step outside of what’s familiar—and trust yourself anyway.

And Karina… thank you for that nudge. 🤍
